(1997–2006)
Massoumeh Ebtekar
In 2006, the author, having had the honour to be Iran’s former Vice President and Head of Department of Environment was awarded the United Nations Environment Program ‘Champion of the Earth’ prize for advances in Iran in the fields of air pollution abatement, enforcement of environmental standards to protect water, regional seas, biodiversity, natural forests and successful international environmental stewardship [1]. The remarks which follow sketch some of the features of activity for Iran’s environment with which the author has been grateful to be associated. During the years 1997–2005, the Islamic Republic of Iran faced an era of unprecedented economic, social and political advancement and growth. This period is known as the ‘Reform Period’ for Iran. During this period, the sustainable development principle was integrated with development policy. These eight years provided an opportunity for change in government and social policy for environmental protection [2]. Favourable social and economic trends coupled with a strong political will for change enabled major players, including the government, private sector and NGOs to collaborate for a common objective of environmental protection.
